Q: Although I have stretched marked skin, the skin itself is quite thick and not thin like some I’ve seen is this fat, skin or both? My weight is 137 and my tummy just won’t shift. On standing it’s not the worst I’ve seen but bent over yuk! Will this thick skin stretch enough for a low scar?

A: You look like a great candidate for a tummy tuck. Navel piercings can often be removed with the tummy tuck, but it depends on how much extra skin you have. During a tummy tuck, your surgeon will cut around your belly button leaving it in place. (S)he will then repair the abdominal muscles, pull the skin tight, cut off the excess and then sew the incision closed and then bring your belly button through. If you don’t have enough skin to remove the piercing altogether, (s)he will have to close the piercing (creating a small scar), then proceed with the procedure. You will need to be seen in person. An experienced surgeon should be able to tell you beforehand whether or not you have enough skin to remove the piercing.

I Am on Mirena IUD Can I Get Surgery?

I Am on Mirena IUD Can I Get Surgery?

Q: I am currently on Mirena IUD. I would like to know if I can get a Brazilian Butt Lift with this device still inside me during surgery?

A: Usually there is no reason to remove your Mirena IUD prior to surgery. I recommend all my patients have preoperative clearance from their physician and most do not suggest removing this method of contraception.

I’m 58, healthy, not overweight, do you think I’m too old for a tummy tuck?

I’m 58, healthy, not overweight, do you think I’m too old for a tummy tuck?

Absolutely not! I often perform cosmetic surgery – including tummy tucks – on women in their 50’s and 60’s! As long as you are healthy, your age does not put you at additional risk compared to younger patients. I always ask my patients, regardless of age, to see their regular doctor prior to surgery to make sure their are no underlying medical problems that could pose a risk during or after surgery. Best of luck!

Is now a good time? My question is can I have a v-bac after a tummy tuck and lipo?

Is now a good time? My question is can I have a v-bac after a tummy tuck and lipo?

Q: I am 25 year old mother of 1 and it is not in my plans to have children for another two years or more My first was an emergency c-section and I am interested in the mommy makeover I am currently at 150 lbs and would like to be at 125 Every time I loose weight my belly hangs from the front and becomes more wrinkled I loose all motivation to loose the weight My question is can I have a v-bac [vaginal birth after Cesarian] after a tummy tuck and lipo? Should I loose more weight before I proceed with the surgery to reach my goal?

A: You raise a couple of great issues with your question. To begin, I recommend that you get to and maintain your desired weight before considering plastic surgery. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and muscles. It is not at all uncommon for you to have some skin laxity and muscle weakness even after losing the pregnancy weight. A tummy tuck repairs the damaged muscles and removes excess skin giving you a nice flat abdomen. I don’t recommend a tummy tuck to women who are planning to have children in the future. While the surgery does NOT affect your ability to conceive, have a healthy pregnancy or interfere with delivery at all, a future pregnancy will likely lead to your being in the exact same predicament again – loose skin, lax muscles. Essentially, pregnancy can undo the tummy tuck. It makes more sense to me to wait until your family is complete and then pursue cosmetic surgery.
