What percentage of full tummy tuck includes lipo suctsion of upper part of tummy as well as dog ears and mont area? Is it dangerous to include them as part of the procedure or its part of the new ways of doing tummy tuck today, since I heard if its not included its the old school way to do tummy tuck? Thank you.

A: Plastic surgery, like most areas of medicine, is advancing. Combination procedures are advantageous to many patients – they are cost effective, limit exposure to anesthesia, reduce down time and minimize time away from work and family. Many plastic surgeons are comfortable combining gentle liposuction in the same surgery as a tummy tuck. In fact, most of my tummy tucks these days include liposuction. I frequently reduce the mons pubis with liposuction. The best way to be certain that a combination of procedures is safe for you is to discuss it with your plastic surgeon.

Q: Will I be able to have a BBL, Liposculpture, and breast augmentation at the same time? I am 26 years old with 1 child. I do not want a tummy tuck. Will the lipo allow my skin to retract? What is the estimated cost? I was thinking about getting the surgery in the Dominican republic. How long should I take off from work?

A: There are several issues to discuss in your question. First, I frequently combine Liposculpture, Brazilian Butt lift and breast augmentation in healthy patients. It does complicate the recovery process when I operate on the front and back of the body at the same time. You will need to lay on your sides for several weeks after surgery.

It is impossible to tell whether or not you can achieve your desired abdominal results with liposuction alone without seeing you. I can tell you that liposuction does not create elasticity of the skin. If you have stretchmarks and loose skin on your abdomen liposuction alone will not fix that. In fact, if you already have loose skin after pregnancy, liposuction without a tummy tuck may make the appearance of loose skin even worse. You will need a consultation to determine whether or not you would benefit from a tummy tuck.

I am VERY concerned about surgery performed outside the US. While there are certainly qualified doctors in other countries, I would recommend your staying in the US for your surgery. Different countries have different standards for education and licensing potentially making it hard to determine who is qualified to perform your surgery. Language barrier could be an issue as well as access to follow up care. It will be VERY hard to convince a US plastic surgeon to take your case if you have a complication after surgery outside the country.

Q: I’m not looking to have another child in 2 or 3 yrs either. or sooner. Id rather get liposuction done and want to avoid a tummy tuck because i know i wont need that, will a liposuction affect a future pregnancy 3 or 4 years from now? Thanks for your time!

A: Having liposuction now will not affect a future pregnancy. It will not, however, prevent pregnancy related body changes. Having liposuction now doesn’t mean you might not want a tummy tuck after you are finished having kids.

Q: I’m a mother of 3 and I could feel my abs coming in under the stubborn ā€œmommy tummyā€. I workout a lot and have a pretty solid build. Like most women who bare children I have that stubborn layer of fat, stretch marks and that loose skin that makes me very insecure. Is a tummy tuck my only option to flatten my stomach? Are scars typically that large? Any other options for me?

A: You sound like an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck. Based on your pictures, you have stretchmarks around your navel. Stretchmarks indicate to me that your skin has been damaged by excessive expansion – in your case it sounds like this occurred during your pregnancies. This damaged skin is never going to snap completely back – it doesn’t matter how much you exercise, watch your diet or apply creams. If you want it gone, it will need to be surgically removed. Scarring is an important consideration – an abdominoplasty does create a scar low on the abdomen from hip to hip and often a scar around the navel – but remember you are trading contour for scar. Also, in the hands of a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon, the incision is hidden by most underwear and swimwear.

Are Colombian, Brazilian and Dominican surgeons better?

Are Colombian, Brazilian and Dominican surgeons better?

Q: Is it true that in these countries they don’t have the same guidelines as to how.much fat they can remove? I’m curious to know because most women whom I know that have had liposculpture here in the US, come out with boxed shape bodies. People that go to Colombia, etc. Come back with coca cola bottle shapes? Why is this? I’m highly considering going to Colombia for a mommy makeover, plus some. The cost is less and it seems like the results are too.

A: There are certainly fantastic plastic surgeons around the world, but outside the US, it can be difficult to be sure that you have selected one. Many patients seek plastic surgery outside the US due to the lower cost, but that can be a risky proposition. Different countries have different medical education and licensing procedures. Traveling outside the US can increase your risk of acquiring an infection. There is also a potential language barrier and you need to fully consider access to follow up care. By selecting a physician inside the US, you have many methods to research your doctor’s education, training and qualifications for the procedures you are considering. Hopefully you won’t experience a complication, but if you do, it is much easier to obtain the necessary follow up and treatment when you have surgery domestically.
