Labia Majora Reduction

The outer vaginal lips, labia majora, can become stretched as a result of pregnancy or weight gain.  When the weight is lost, the labial skin does not always contract leaving loose or sagging lips.

The outer vaginal lips can lose volume over time leading to wrinkling.  There are a number of injectables that can be used to replace this lost volume.  We commonly use a patient’s own fat from another area of the body for this purpose.

Sometimes the outer lips of the vagina do not come together (converge) above and/or below the vaginal opening.  The lips can be pulled together surgically to create a more pleasing appearance.

Many women ask me about liposuction to reduce the fatty bulges above and around the vagina.  These fat deposits can be unsightly in underwear, swimwear and when nude.  Liposuction can be used to reduce the fat in these areas.

Procedure

The liposuction is performed using tumescent or ultrasound – assisted technique (VASER liposuction).  In either case tumescent fluid (a mixture of sterile saline, lidocaine and epinephrine) is injected into the treatment area and then this fluid along with fat is removed using a small cannula.  Small incisions are typically placed in the groin.  Scarring is minimal due to the small size of the incisions and typically no suturing is required.

For the procedure, an incision is made in each breast, so that all excess skin, fat and tissue can be removed. Depending on your particular situation, liposuction may be used to remove additional fatty deposits.

If your breasts are extremely large and the nipple is pointing downward, it may be repositioned to give you the most pleasing appearance. Finally, the incisions are sutured together. A compression garment or surgical support bra will be placed to reduce swelling and help maintain your new shape.

You will discuss various anesthesia options with Dr. Jimerson, including sedation and general anesthesia. He will determine the best type of anesthesia based on the procedures, your health history and his preferences.

Dr. Jimerson has several options to use during the breast lift surgery, which will depend on your breast size and shape, the current position of your areola, how much your breast is sagging the quality of your skin.

Options include an incision around the areola; around the areola and then vertically down to the breast crease; and an incision around the areola, down to the breast crease and then horizontally along the breast crease. After the incision is made, the breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to enhance the breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola is repositioned to a natural, more youthful position. If required, Dr. Jimerson will reduce the areolas by excising skin along the perimeter. Finally, excess skin is removed from the breast to make up for the loss of elasticity.

The incisions are then closed, and sutures are placed in layers deep within the breast tissue to provide support. In addition to sutures, Dr. Jimerson may use skin adhesives and surgical tape to close the incision.

The inframammary incision is made underneath the breast, in the area where it meets the body. In the transaxillary incision, access for the implant is made underneath the arm, in the armpit area.

There are two options for placing the implant; one is under the pectoral muscle, the other is right behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle.  This will depend on the type of implant, your body type, how much increase in size is desired and Dr. Jimerson’s preference.

Once the implants are inserted, the incisions are closed using sutures, surgical tape or surgical glue. You’ll be able to see the results immediately after surgery, but some swelling will be present.

The doctor starts the procedure by making a small incision in your midsection. The exact location of the incision will be based on what is required during the procedure but is often made in the belly button or below the waistline to hide the very little scaring that may take place.
